Chhath Puja – A Festival of Faith and Light

Chhath Puja is a festival that shines with purity, faith, and gratitude. It is one of the oldest Hindu festivals, where devotees worship Lord Surya (the Sun God) and Goddess Usha. The rituals are performed on riverbanks, ponds, and ghats, where the water reflects the soft glow of diyas and the rising sun. Every offering of fruit, sugarcane, and *thekua* carries a prayer for happiness, peace, and good health.

The Beauty of Devotion

As the sun sets, thousands of devotees stand in waist-deep water with folded hands, singing traditional songs that praise nature and life. The air is filled with chants and the fragrance of incense sticks, making the moment feel divine. Chhath Puja is not only about worship but about purity of heart, discipline, and deep gratitude toward the power that sustains life on earth — the Sun.

The Famous Story of Chhath Puja – Blessings from the Sun God

Long ago, there was a King named Priyavrat who had everything — wealth, power, and a loving queen named Malini — but they had no child. The king and queen were heartbroken, and after years of prayers, they decided to perform a yajna (holy ritual) seeking blessings for a child.

One day, Rishi Kashyap advised the king to perform a special offering to Lord Surya and Goddess Usha. The queen followed every ritual with full devotion. Finally, the gods were pleased, and Goddess Usha appeared in a divine light, blessing Queen Malini with a child.

However, when the child was born, he didn’t breathe. The king and queen were shattered. The queen prayed all night beside the river, offering her tears and prayers to the Sun God. Moved by her faith, Lord Surya appeared at dawn and said, “Your devotion has touched my heart. From today, those who worship me with purity and faith will be blessed with life, light, and prosperity.” The divine rays touched the child — and he came back to life.

From that day, people began worshipping the Sun during Chhath Puja to seek his blessings for good health, long life, and happiness. It became a symbol of hope and miracles born from faith.

The Meaning Behind the Rituals

Each ritual of Chhath Puja carries spiritual meaning — fasting shows control over desires, standing in water symbolizes humility, and offering *arghya* to the sun expresses gratitude for life. Devotees believe that through this puja, they receive not just blessings for their families but also inner peace and strength.
